About as artistic as a bent spoon at best, I'm studying multimedia at TAFE; Which mixes digital art, design, video and programming. I guess I want to see where I can go with my art/writing. I love to...

The Toilet, no less.

By zachariah sullivan

Alex found himself needing to go to the bathroom, so made his way out of his small bed and into the adjoining bathroom. The toilet was broken, flooding with a sickly smelling, murky water. It wasn’t due to anything he had put there; all water in this town was murky. Alex had grown used to this. There was no such thing as a plumber here, if you wanted something fixed you would ask the locals or do it yourself. Alex was simply expected to make do if something went wrong, or hope it got better soon. He often used the facilities of another cabin in such situations. The people of the village usually just left their doors open and kept their heads down when people entered uninvited. Alex had once entered an apartment to use the facilities to find a man and a woman sitting on a couch together. They were talking.

Alex hadn’t expected to see anyone in the cabin, hoping that it would be empty, and didn’t know exactly how to react. Was he doing anything wrong? He had entered a fair few cabins uninvited before, but now he had his doubts. Was it against the law? Alex wasn’t sure, which made him feel even more uncomfortable. He wanted to get out of the cabin, but found he couldn’t. Out of shock or simple horror, Alex stood staring at the couple in their humble lounge room. He saw that the woman was holding something in her arms, not completely registering what he saw. In her arms, clinging to one of the woman’s breasts was a baby. The woman spoke. She was very beautiful indeed; her hair very long. He wondered how anyone could possibly keep such long hair.

“Hello dear. Was there anything you wanted?” Alex was horrified. Part of him had hoped they would scream, or at the very least the husband would tell Alex to leave. Where Alex came from, a situation such as this would never have occurred. “I-I would like to use the restroom. If you don’t mind.” Alex walked past the family and used their facilities, before hurriedly leaving. He never returned to that hut.

Alex decided his safest option would be to find another place in his cabin he could go The only window his hut was equipped with was in the kitchen. It was small and offered very little light. Alex opened it, inspecting the pavement below. All clear. He unzipped the front part of his jeans, a pathetic trickle of urine falling to the ground below. It would be weeks before the next rain offered to wash away his window-borne sin. Alex considered avoiding that side of his cabin until such a time came.
